Sangeet (Music)

The co-existence of the three forms of art, viz. Dance, song, Music (instrumental & Percussion) is known as Music.

Naad (Sound)

A sound, which is continious & caused due to vibrations, which are helpful for creating music, is called Naad.

Swar (Notes of music)

Different sounds which are useful & helpful in creating music either vocally or instrumentally are known as Notes of sound or Swar.

There are 7 main  Swar’s. These main Swar’s are known as pure or Natural notes or Swars. Their names are as follows :- Shadja or Sa, Rishabha or  Re, Gandhar or Ga, Madhyam or Ma,Pancham or Pa, Dhaivat or Dha and Nishad or Ni.

Vikrut Swar (Other notes)

Vikrut means twisted or bended. When a natural note(swar) gets twisted or bended in such a way that its position is shifted either a little higher or lower then such a swar is known as Vikrut Swar.

There are two types of Vikrut Swars- Komal and Teevra. Out of seven swars Re, Ga, Dha and Ni are Komal and Ma is Teevra. Sa and Pa do not leave their positions. They are known as fixed swars or Achala Swars

Komal Swar

When a natural note gets shifted in such a way that its position is shifted little lower than usual that swar is called Komal Swar. Re, Ga, Dha, Ni are four Komal Swars.

Teevra Swar

When a natural note gets raised a little higher than its original position, that note is called as Teevra Swar. Ma is the only Teevra Swar.

Saptak (Octave)

The area starting from Sa and ending in Ni, which includes all seven Shuddha Swars and five Vikrut Swars is termed as a Saptak

Hindustani music utilises or makes use of three such saptaks. These are named as Mandra Saptak(Lower Octave),Madhya Saptak(Middle Octave) and Taar Saptak (Higher Octave)
